The project values the work performed by families’ initiatives in different part of Costa Rica. It invites to be part of the way of living of local farmers and their families. Volunteers will be able to observe or to get involved in the farming activities. Learn how to prepare one or more typical recipes, and learn and improve your Spanish throughout the process.

 

Volunteer work:

 

You will contribute to the sustainable development of the community by carrying out community work, such as painting churches or schools, clearing trails in biological reserves, agricultural activities or any other type of need existing in the community or family farms.

 

Location:

 

The project is in different communities in  northern Costa Rica.

Internships

  • Especially designed for Universities, Colleges, High Schools Environmental Groups and others

contribute to the development of the communities of Central America with Reto Juvenil InternacionalWith the interest of promoting alternative models of international cooperation through volunteers, RJI offers opportunities to individuals, groups and universities to contribute to the development of the communities of Central America.

We can implement internships and projects that suit the requirements and expectations of volunteers and institutions. Projects and programs are available for 1 to 4 weeks periods and are opened throughout the year, depending of the communities´ needs and the number of volunteers.

In this way, we have cooperated creating volunteer internships and development projects for students of a wide range of national and international universities, including:

United States: Columbia University, Texas AIM, Winthrop University, Michigan University,
Canada: McGill University, Wilfred Laurier University, Ottawa University, Ryerson University, University of Toronto, Carleton University, Vancouver Island University, Queens University, Dalhousie University, Windsor University, Western University, British Columbia University and Simon Fraser University.
México: Universidad Iberoamericana.

The types of costumized projects that RJI could offer, but is not limited to, include the following:

Conservation Projects

  • Fauna: A project dedicated to the conservation of macaws, a native bird of American tropics. The focus is mainly on two species, the scarlet macaw and the green macaw. Both of these beautiful birds which are currently in great danger of extinction.
  • Individual or group
  • Number of volunteers (maximum 5)
  • Duration 1 to 8 weeks Age under age and  18+
  • Environment: work on conservation programs in a National Parks, either in southern or northern of Costa Rica, in areas that they go from the tropical humid forest to the dwarfed cloudy forest with great diversity, ecosystems and species.
    • Individual or group
    • Number of volunteers (maximum 6)
    • Duration 1 to 8 weeks under Age and 18+

    Children related projects

    • Children at social risk:this program provides a temporary alternate housing center for children that are suffering psychological and/or physical abuse. The children stay at the shelter during the time that their parents receives counseling or treatment.
     
    • Individual volunteering.
    • Duration 1 to 8 weeks
    • Under Age and 18+
  • Children with disabilities: a group of parents that joined together with the hopes of improving the lives of their sons, daughters’ or relatives who have been affected by a disability, most of these families live in poor conditions.

  • Age 18+
  • Health care: Work in a hospital assisting in the care of the children, and make their hospital stay a more pleasant time.

Women's Projects

    • Empowerment and development: Work with a group of women in developing both institutional and personal level. The group formed with the idea of being self- supporting.

  • Cultural Exchange

    • Vacation with farmer families: This project "values the work performed by our volunteers. We invite you to be part of our program and to enjoy farmer culture and life in rural areas in Costa Rica and Guatemala.

    Organic Agriculture Project

    • Work with a grassroots organization, comprised mainly of small organic producers to improve the quality of life of the farmers.
